Update time: Checking in for the Year of Balance and Future Plans

<![CDATA[Hello All!

It’s been awhile! I never meant for this blog to accidentally go on hiatus after my last post in relation to my views on Proportional Representation but life sure finds away to make me busy. I rather not get into the why as a lot of its personal and work stuff, but I did want to give an update on the current progress of the “Year of Balance” theme that I gave to myself, and some of the goals that I gave myself.

I’ve had some successes and some failures, so lets unpack that a little bit…

What's going Well

Videos

Let’s start with the main objective, the 6 videos by the end of the year is on track more than I thought. Not only do I already have 3 videos (including the channel Trailer) But I have several scripts done for smaller videos, and I’ll likely reach the goal by the end of summer. This is mostly because I’ve decided to make 3 rumbleverse videos on the account that the game shutdown, so that’s been my priority. The videos are as follows:

Rumbeverse Highlights
Rumbleverse The Things You Never Noticed Type video (icebergesque?)
Rumbleverse Overview type video

This is all so I can show some appreciation for a game that I would play with my friend all the time. Fair Warning, I plan to exploit as much footage in shorts as I can while I’m working on these. I’m also thinking of uploading some of the “raw” gameplay as kind of archival effort. Not sure if I want that on the main channel or my old “Brologic Production” Channel. trying to decide on that but I have time to think on that.

For those interested, YouTube user: Computerwhiz has some gameplay footage that is submitted by fans, and I plan to submit some of my solo gameplay as not to clog My Nemes Content channel.

But aside from the rumbleverse appreciation videos I have the following scripts written up

Animal crossing wild world
RSS
Linux Laptop Dual Booting
Putting linux on my Brothers old laptop
A Video Lossless Cut As I’ve used it for the Pokemon nuzlocke and rumbleverse videos

Once the rumbleverse overview and things you didn’t know is scripted and recorded, Those videos will be my next focused for recording and editing. With any luck I’ll get those before the end of the year as well totally the videos to 10 (Not including shorts)! If I can pull that off that I would be amazing!

While originally I planned to get those smaller videos out and a multi part Pokemon nuzlocke (learning from my time making the capture card saga) first, but I feel like there’s kind of urgency with rumbleverse’s closure. Even though I’ve been very slow with make those videos. You can blame how busy I’ve been for the last two month. Still I feel these videos will be some of my most involved. Stay tuned for those

Other wins and unexpected happy accidents

There’s also been handful of other happy accidents and minor wins that happened so far this year:

Graphics update

I updated the graphic for my youtube’s profile picture and will sever as the logo going forward. Might still make a tweak or two to this but I’m mostly satisfied.

I also made my social media profile picture this iconic thumbnail I like it a lot and thing it’s funny. Might do more with this later down the line.

Shorts

Shorts every 2 weeks have been working out well for the most part. Still trying to do more original edited shorts in addition to the main video promotion that have been doing since last year. The blessing and curse has been from me using the shorts on mobile to make shorts on the fly via my phone. The latter are be spitting hot takes rather than the skit like shorts I prefer to make but it’s sometimes nice to get some thoughts out of my head.

Though with that being said I am going to make a shorts series based on the mobile editor because I have some GRIPS. Mostly with how the cutting works post recording the segments, but that’s for another post/short.

Generally speaking, The shorts have been doing better than last year so that’s been a good sign so far.

That being said I have one skit like short read to be edited so hopefully I can get it and others out soon. (It’s actually going to be on June 3rd lol)

Future Kenshi Series

You might have seen this coming if you’ve seen the two kenshi short’s I’ve made recently. You see because I recently I got into Rise of TMNT because of a certain Cloud Pup I decided to spin up a game of Kenshi with Hivers being the stand in for turtles. I ended up being so engaged with this save that I decided that I will be making a Kenshi Series in the same vein as the “Grog Saga” By YouTuber Bryien.

It will follow The Hivers incarnations of Leo, Raph, Mikey, and Donnie as well as Master Denters (skeleton joke lol) as they survive in Storm Gap Coast. Limbs will be lost, Weapons will be stole, and I will be salty, but damn if it wasn’t good kenshi content.

This is a something that I will likely start working on the script and stuff first thing after I get rumbleverse videos done. Don’t expect to see anything about it until like fall or something as I still want to get the other videos that I’ve had on the back burner first before taking on this project.

Just know it’s something that I want to do.

Some failings so far and unexpected road bumps

Nothing everything has gone according to plan. There’s some thing I’ve been failing on a little bit.

Not too much balance in the Year of Balance

Yeah I’ve sort of been failing at the balance. I’ve been trying to be better at resting on the days I’ve been off, the weeks I get an extra a day or two have been helpful. The problem has been (at least so far) has been working overtime at work something I did not for see when taking the 10 hour days.

The other thing I’ve been kind of failing at is better use of my time. I’ve fallen victim to the scroll again. This is partially because… holy shit twitter is such a trash fire lately! like such a trash fire have you seen it?

But also, to not completely take the blame off my self, partially because habit are bad to break. Recognizing this I’ve ramped up my RSS feed curation for my friends, creators, and meme account I follow. However I realize I need to fine a way to combat my need for scrolling when I’be bored. I’ll have to look up strategy on how best to tackle that.

Finally mental health has been fine. Hasn’t really improved but not tanked later. That being said I’m acknoleging that I need to take of my self phsyically so I can be mentally healthy as well (I’ll explain more down the page). In addition to that, with the hope of getting a home office set up in July, the compartmentalizing of my home might help in improving my feeling of being stuck in the same place all the time. if only slightly. I might also just need to get out more lol.

RoadBlocks in the game of LIFE!

The Cough that Never went away

So I’ve had this cough for a while. Like.. awhile awhile. Like I’ve had this cough since 2016ish awhile. And then it got worse in 2023 just a little bit before Christmas. It gotten to the point where it’s affecting both my physical and mental health. Like I’m still fiiiiiiine but it would be nice to not wake up coughing, having acid reflex and having to wait to eat food in morning. So I’m going to get that checkout just to see what the hell is going on with this thing.

Time Management has never been my strong suit

Time Management has been one of my weaker points. I can show up and do my job or task of course. It’s getting around to the personal tasks is the problem. Or even just finishing things that I have started. Finishing up this blog I took multiple breaks to write this up.

At some ways I’ve think I’ve gotten slightly better at this, I’ve gotten more videos and shorts done this year than my previous years so far so I think I’m doing something right. I’ve even have had time set aside for relaxation and time playing games with friends! that’s been nice. Still Improvements need to be made. I find I get the distracted easily either with my curiosity or my undisciplined butt.

Above I mentioned my scrolling addiction on twitter. I feel like that might need that might need a post describing my feelings on still being on twitter, but the point stands is I need to be doing more important things than scrolling the for you page (could be said for all social medias that have a but shush for now). I’m still in the process of trying move as much as I can to rss and try using that to follow friends just so I can filter out the noise and so there is an END. In between using Thunderbird, and the “Feed Bro” web extension as the Rss Reader. Feed bro has some nice conveniences for following social media accounts without workarounds, but there’s some stuff I like about thunderbird with as a more traditional rss reader (plus I should switch to that for email). Both are good choices and I will be bringing both up in my video.

I’ve also been using Tumblr, which has been a nice habit replacer since I follow y2k aesthetic and Pokemon stuff on there mostly. Still waiting on fediverse support for that site.

Think my main focus for the latter should be trying to further replace the hellsite (Rss, Tumble, Mastodon) and try to keep its use to the minimum. I enjoy my online friends on there, and I will support them, but I have so many issues with the site and current owner, and fundamentally know twitter is bad for my mental health. So I got to do something, ANYTHING to reduce my scrolling habits.

I should mention that I’ve also been accepting over time at my work. I’m paid for that extra time, so I don’t mind it too much, but it has slightly impacted my personal efforts. This was partly why I was busy for the most part throughout April and may and didn’t really update much (that and fun personal life stuff). Hopefully, not too much of that will happen over the summer, here’s hoping

Things I haven’t gotten around too

The NeoCities Site

The NeoCities site I want to make has taken a backseat as I’ve focused on other things. A fun fusion of needing the time and being intimidated by HTML. I plan to try and poke at it over the summer

I maybe doing some practice over on Tumblr because a Sea slug told me to try Tumblr to get way further from the twitter. Tumblr has a neat theme (HTML) editor that might give me some insight and idea’s. This way I’m still working towards my goal without going head first into without any background. Sort of what I did here with CSS style.

Exercising

Remember how I said in my last post on this topic I planned to exercise more? … Yeah I have yet to do that consistently yet. I kept putting it off and putting it off (partially because of what I mentioned above about that damn cough) However, It’s something I’ve recently tried picking back up. I’ve gone on the bike, and I’ve tried out the rower and we’ll see where that goes. I have not real goal for Exercising besides maintenance at this point, though getting stronger never hurts of course.

Linux has taken a backseat

With me trying focus on a verity of videos, Linux exploration has taken a bit of a backseat. I wrote the script to the Dualboot video but I haven’t done too much since. Mostly due to my free time being taken up by other fun activities such as gaming, and rumble verse’s shut down took priority. Plus, I’ve been taking on those hours at work as well.

I still want to explore linux and it and open source is an interest of mine, but my motivation has been low lately, and the gameplay videos hav been fun so far.

My main hope is to get the dual boot video done before the end of the year, due to end of window 8.1 support, and I don't want to keep pushing it off. In addition to this, I want to make a “Laptop restoration with linux” and a “Nobara Project/linux’ video as well if I’m lucky. though might be next year at this point depends on how I’m feeling / where I am near the end of the year.

Closing thoughts because this update is way to damn long

So things could be going better, but they could also be going worse. I think I recognize where I need to go from here to improve these aspects. Main take away, I need too scroll less, do ANYTHING ELSE, and actually take care of myself for once! With any luck my other videos should be worked on through out the summer! Rumbleverse and some other tech videos included.

I think that’s fair I’ll write up another one of these near the end of the year to see if I make any improvement. I like to think writing it down first will help in making a commitment.

Next update is going to be the, now canned, RUP Script. I swear! Because I’m on my Proportional Representation kick again.

Until then!

#Yearlytheme #update #YouTube

hr
A a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCnep562d6A4eKeOy-J5xxQ/"Nemes Content/a Blog 2022.]]>

New Year, New YouTube, New Videos Coming

<![CDATA[I’m finally back to producing videos and I’ve made some progress.
The World Of Alt-UGC Streaming Platforms and Services

<![CDATA[Youtube Alternatives, and sites in used in addition as a monetary support wether it be donate or subscription sites is something that has always been an interest for me. While I don’t currently have any interest in taking my content seriously much less monetize it, the fact that individuals can make a career out of their work easier than ever with so many different methods, tools and approaches takes up more of my idle scrolling time. Plus, I think if you’re reading this blog you' probably have come to the conclusion that for all of YouTube’s pluses, you still know that hosting all your videos on one platform may not end well. Especially given the recent changes to YouTube’s policy.

So for this blog post I want to talk about some of the alternatives or additional streaming services to YouTube that personally taken an interest in. If but, from a far.

!--more--

PeerTube - The Obligatory Fediverse Mention

Peertube Visualized

You had to see this coming. On a Write As blog? Someone who uses a Mastodon? Of course!

PeerTube is the Fediverse’s answer to YouTube. By using technologies of ActivityPub and WebTorrent (A peer to peer technology) that form a decentralized and federated video streaming service. Much like Mastodon, Peertube instances federate with each other instances to build a network of video. Given the nature of video’s size and what not, federation with other instances have to be opt in. To aid in this federation, WebTorrent/HLS with P2P streaming to help with bandwidth costs, and instances can even cache video from other instances to ensure a smoother experience. This federation can also be asymmetrical (So instance A can sync with instance B but instance B does not have to return in kind).

The sized of an instance can range form one person self hosting to multi account instances either with open registration, or invite only.

From a creator’s perspective I appreciate how far the project has come. Provided the instance have its settings configured, a creator can import YouTube videos, trans code to different resolutions to having a global search across the fediverse. One of my personal favourite features is that a creator can have a overarching profile and then have their content split up among other channels if they have more than one channel of different content. This means you can follow everything or just select content from the creator you want kept up to date with either on Peertube, other Fediverse services or even RSS.

I think this pretty cool, and if / when Mstdn.ca has their PeerTube Instance Open up I’ll likely be looking into uploading there as well. However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. The hosting costs for many maybe high to those looking to self host, and because of this, many open instances have limits on how much you can upload. I have also seen valid concerns for copyright content being used on instances, and the legal implications as the instances will be more directly responsible with content on their site. Considering the P2P services would be similar to that of a Nabster or other torrent site\, it could get messy.

\Credit where credit is due, this was pointed out by fantranslation.org ‘s administrator during their endeavours to self-host a mastodon instance.

Also worth pointing out that creators will have to rely on outside monitzation methods to to accrue revenue, but is still an alternative place to host content.

Even with the barriers and concerns, I hope peertube continues to grow into a niche alternative that will be watching the development on.

Nebula - The Streaming Service By Creators For Creators

Nebula Logo
If you’ve been round YouTube for a while you’ve heard of Nebula. Formerly known as “Standard.TV”, Nebula is like a fusion of Multi Channel Network, and a paid for streaming service. The service works similar to YouTube Premium where the revenue for Nebula is split 50/50 between Nebula and the creators which the pool is then split out from the watch time on the site.

For 5 dollars a month or 50 dollars a year, that gives you access to exclusive content depending on the creators whims. Some video have extended cuts, early access, and exclusive videos be they behind the scenes, or a regular video exclusive to the site. Recently they’ve also expanded into a SkillShare-like Nebula Classes.

You might have heard in a lot of sponsor spots that refers to \insert your favourite nebula creator\] as service owned by them and some of their creator friend. This turns out to not just be a marketing strategy. Turns out that 50% also refers to [tangible ownership of the company and in the event of a liquidation, 50% of the payout goes to creators.

Nebula however is not open to just any Content Creator to join up and do not actively seek creators out. They are very focused on quality over quantity, and content that they would be okay with standing behind. Honestly, I can respect that. Association with a brand/site does colour a potential user’s perception of the site.

It’s clear that Nebula brands it self less of platform and more of an exclusive club of independent creators. This has given the benefit of actually having original content exclusive series to the site. And I mean full on original series, like what YouTube Originals were before YouTube canned the project.

All around I like the idea of Nebula, but I’m also suspicious of its longevity even with Curiosity’s backing. While the 5 dollars for the full access of the site is good for my wallet while still supporting some of my favourite content creators, It also seems low for the amount the service is trying to do. However, for now it seems to be one of the easier ways for me to support some of my favourite creators including EposVox and The Amaazing, so I might as well use it.

Floatplane - Like Patreon but Video Focused

FloatPlane App

Floatplane is the Linus Media Group’s in house subscription service gone Video Streaming Platform. Their main pitch is to paywall high quality video and audio along with behind the scenes content, and exclusive livestreams. Individual Creators do not have to follow this, they are free to set their prices and give whatever rewards they feel like to their subscribers. Of course, the higher quality uploads do seem to be a plus for those who’s focus is one video production.

Similar to Nebula, Floatplane does not have open sign ups for the creator’s side. However, Floatplane does take applications from creators who want to partner them. It’s not a guarantee as it does appear that they want creators draw users in of mutual benefit to themselves and the creator, but from the outside it does seem to have less of barrier to entry.

Aside from being a LTT fan and Canadian, do have a lot of hope for Floatplane given its video focus. Personally if I was starting to look into monetizing content and I thought it could provide value, I’d look into signing up to floatplane. That being said the current amount of creators on the site is small, and Floatplane seems content with growing slowly (as leader of the the project would say, Data’s expensive so fair.) If I was an analyst, I’d take a guess even as they were to gain traction, they would probably focus selective partnerships even after Beta considering they do not see themselves as a YouTube or Twitch competitor.

I could be wrong on that considering I only know what I can gleam from promotional videos, and The podcast The WAN Show. Regardless I hope if this site doesn’t swore it will float.

(Yes I stole that from quote from Luke (I think), It’s a good analogy.)

Utreon - A Technically Impressive Platform Alternative

Utreon Store

Utreon is actually the inspiration as to why I wrote up this blog post. Why? Well remember that blog post I made about the lack of adequate tools YouTube gives Creators to be responsible on their platform? Yeah Utreon came to a similar conclusion that I did. That giving more incremental metadata would benefit creators, viewers, and advertisers.

Instead of doing what many other Alt-platforms do where they indulge in so called “Free Speech Absolutism”, Utreon tries to make the case that a real solution lies in making informed decisions though clearly defined data that create creditability, and rules that are evenly applied. This gives me a little more faith in the platform as it’s not trying to put ideology over practicality, which then either forces said platform to end up conforming similar to YouTube to keep advertisers, or doubling down and being an overall nasty place.

One way they want to implement this is by having creator label content for things like violence, swearing, the use of weapons and drugs, and general NSFW stuff. This for a more glandular system than YouTube’s heavy handed, and seemingly binary one. This was personally my main draw to the site in interest, and then all the technical aspects were a nice addition.

While the platform is currently in beta, it’s pretty feature rich. On the user side, the site has support for both live streaming and VOD content, search functionality, An expansive topic list, the ability to follow creators via an account, a button for rss for off site updates.

From a creator’s side, you have a creator page, Posts, Youtube import/sync, video groups, integration with your storefront, and even A early release system that automates early access content. That many features, and growing might be enough to raise some eyebrows.

Currently they have quite a few Monetization options as well. Allowing for 5 tiers of Creator subscription, 3 tiers of their YouTube Premium equivalent “Utreon Plus” that split 55% of the revenue to the creators via watch time, Ultra Chat donations, and appear to be even flirting with renting/buying independent films on their site. These are boasted to have utreon take smaller cuts than the current tech leaders, of 5% plus fees (2.9% + $0.30 processing) with subscriptions, and 15% with “Ultra Chats”

A Unique feature Utreon has for their livestreams where if you’re collaborating with other creators, you can split the revenue from Ultra Chats how ever the creators choose to up to 10. I think this could be a benefit for some streamers show regularly collab with other creators or part of a streaming group.

From an outside view all seems very promising, especially from the technical side. The roadmap for this years focus on Utreon is on, site Integrations, a moderation system, and a recommendation system that appears to be separate form the current come screen options. It will be very interesting to see where this platform goes in 2023.

But, of course, we’ve all heard this before does anyone remember vidme? It’s always good to proceed with caution when ever looking alternative platforms and revenue streams. For now all we can do is wait and see how adherent the site will be to their credibility focus, and if priorities change in the future.

That being said, I also quickly want to go over what I would like to see form the platform personally.

Things I’d Like To See:

What I would really like to see form utreon is expand on the collaboration features to videos as well for vod focused creators. Perhaps one expansion can be like “Group Channels” where multiple creators form a channel fans can subscribe to support said creators and maybe even exclusive content at a discounted rate. Likely wouldn’t be the norm but it’s a thought.

I’d also like to see “UltraThanks” be a thing (similar to Super Thanks) as not everyone has a focus on live-streaming content, but I feel like there’s a reason that’s yet be implemented or they are simply focusing on other features. I’d even like to see something similar to Bits in which a user can pay up front to then forward money to creators of their choosing. My argument for a bits like system is for user budgeting as you can make a payment there for say, the month, and then spread to different content creators later. I’ll admit that is more of a pie in the sky hope than anything else.

When the Ad program becomes a bit more robust, one personal big hope is that the ad association can go both ways. Much in a similar way that ad companies don’t want to appear before certain or even controversial content, I think creators don’t want take money from certain types of organizations. I hope that while overall the ad system is to be a more fairer system in matching advertisers to suitable content, I also hope that the creator can have a “don’t show ads from X Organization” so its not just this double like on YouTube.

Current growing pains

For all my praises currently there are some things that currently makes it less than perfect.

Understandably, the ads are not yet revenue shared with creators at the moment, they’re still trying to build that network for advertisers. My issue currently is that the current ads on the site are mostly retro ads from the 90s and 2000s. I feel like they’ve been testing out the ad features in the meantime, but it’s doesn’t put a whole lot of confidence at the moment.

There is also the current creators on the site that I actually am interested in watching are low. With my current account I am currently following Mr.Beat, Brodie Robertson, and eBuzz Central. Not a whole lot at the moment, and only eBuzz of those 3 promote utreon, so I’m unsure if the other two are the verified creators. At the moment, the main viewership appears to be Firearms related after C&Rsenal and Forgotten Weapons joined the platform which is understandable given Utreon’s current stances, aka “So long as its legal.” There is of course more on the site, the topics are very well categorized, but aside from those that I’ve mentioned, there’s not a lot of content for me personally on the site.

Hopefully that changes going forward for some of the smaller creators that I’ve watched such as a Wendigoon type or even RT Game that have had issues with YouTube’s systems in the past. Only time will tell.

Conclusion

I think there’s a lot of cool things happening in Creator spaces and platforms. Do I think YouTube is going disappear because of any of these? Probably not? do I think they’re neat? Yes. I hope that each one of these continue for the next, 5 years if not 10. I’ll likely look at these again if anything interesting happens.

For now… I’m going to write about something else when next we meet.

#Peertube #Utreon #Floatplane #Nebula #Youtube

hr
A a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCnep562d6A4eKeOy-J5xxQ/"Nemes Content/a Blog 2022.]]>

PeerTube is the Fediverse’s answer to YouTube. Turns out that 50% also refers to tangible ownership of the company and in the event of a liquidation, 50% of the payout goes to creators.

Floatplane – Like Patreon but Video Focused

Utreon – A Technically Impressive Platform Alternative

<![CDATA[First Blog post of the new year. I hope everyone who had a good christmas and any other holiday. Now we have to talk about another tech company annoying me.

youtube's video is unavailable icon.

Like literally minute one of the new year, Youtube videos are being changed to Limited Moneitized and Mature content because of new policy changes. Which in typical youtube fashion was not communicated or if it was, it was buried under less iportent update emails like Handle changes. This was first reported by Cr1tical:

iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Yv3a7Pfyl4" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen/iframe

And then have an 4 days later:

iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KkIN74s1kMw" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen/iframe

!--more--

(Warning ahead of time Btw… A lot of videos inbound).

The Increase In The Onus On Creators

I think the wildest thing about this is that the customer support Charlie was talking to did not know of this changes without going digging. I get YouTube is a big company, but you would think there would be a memo on their slack channel or something. That's wilder to me then just the fact that this was "snuck in" as some YouTubers felt.

Now there reasons for this change could be numberous. More pressure from advertisers being put on skechy videos. The Gonzalez V Google Case that brings into question if an algorithm suggesting and/or Recommending content counts as an endorsement of the content from the company (That's whole other topic for another day and given Charlie’s videos I can bet good money that played a role in these policy changes). One the algorithms had a 0.01% change and everything went side ways and more wonky enforcement.

iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/J0byDkDD5p4" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen/iframe

(A video on Gonzalez V Google Case if you some how have missed it.)

The reason for this change doesn't matter too much in the grand scheme of things. It's not nearly as important on how youtube enforcing the policy, and the tools to help comply.

Another example RTGames has several videos limited and age restricted. The crazy thing is that it started with one video and then after asking help from youtube more videos got limited as well due to the new policy changes. Shotty communication as well. This had gotten so bad for RT games that he straight up is telling people not to ask youtube to help as it might make problems worse.

I don't think obfuscation should be a reasonable solution. At the end of the day, independent creators and businesses should be working with the site not against the site. It should not be that creators feel as though not only are they going to be punished arbitrarily for trying to reasonably resolve an issue, but have the status of their channel made worse because of their efforts to resolve said issue.

Since COPPA brought the hammer down on YouTube, Creators are expected to have even more responsibility over their content than ever and that trend is starting to increase. To a point this does make sense, Creators should take on some responibilty for the content they produce and the message they are communicating. The problem I've always had with this is the tools to comply in a balanced way, and creators tend to lack meaningful control in key aspects of content creation. For instance, a "Family Friendly" video is not necessarily for kids, the same way that having some violence does not make something 18+. There's a lack of middle ground. As for meaningful control, can't pick and choose what effectively ads could appear on a Creator’s videos as seen in this old video by Hank Green:

iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/IGBihNZflQ" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen/iframe

Yet The Current System is Too Restrictive, and Lacks Nuance

I want to suggest something is something that comes to many as so obvious. Youtube should have more than binary age rating, and should give creators the means to put content warnings.

I expect some critics of this, and maybe I'm alittle Naive but hear me out. There's more to age ratings than just for kids, Approprate for all ages, and 18+ Mature. There's nuance. Teen Titians GO, Family Guy, The Simpsons, South Park Rise of the TMNT, Love, Death, And Robots, are all animated, but for intendented different age demographic nad contents different kinds of content and content intensity. Same could be said for live action shows like Malcom in the Middle, Two and a Half Men, NCIS.

Content Warnings is one way we can better categorize content without it going full "Limited". Again not all violence for example is Doom Eternal or that terrible The Callisto Protocol, sometimes it's merely cartoony like like Rumbleverse or Sly Cooper. As much as teen would dislike this I can't deny that gameplay content has to play a role in determining age rating along iwth creator supplementary content.

And demographics are wide on YouTube. Place where you can find a video on just about anything and everything (all of time). It only makes sense that these audiences are approatiedly accomodated.

Plus, the algorythm in all of its "Wisdom" love getting information about. Wouldn't this better serve content to right the people in what they're looking for. It's not like youtube isn't trying to figure out who YOU are all the time, so what not better sync with that isntend of the AI purely making that decision. That is unless youtube only cares about clicks, and outrag- I mean engagement.

The reason I make the arguement for Content warnings is to help users, and advertisers better be informed for what they wish to watch. It's not like this would be hard to implement as there already some video I've found that has a viewer discretion disclaimer. It would be helpful to have that for self imposed content warnings. Ideally, a user would be able to customize when these content warning pop ups occur, and only have the warning in a collapsible side bar, and maybe filter the age rating similar to NewGrounds.

This is sort of inspired by Rebecca Parham getting dinged for her bullying related video. While I think it's, for lack of a better word... Stupid, that talking about a serious issue being discussed in a genuine way is deemed as demonitizeable, I can at least sympathize that serious discussions might need that sort of destination even if the content is ultimately appropriate for 13+ or even younger thus being falsely set to limited by the system. A creator talking about necessary topics should be able to do so without the whole video going out of whacky, especially if the creator is known to “play ball.”

Another argument is that not everything made with more edgier, serious, adult, or the like bent to them is in bad faith (Ie being a “Gotcha”, in poor taste). There many videos that take conversations about sentitive topics like bullying, and mental health that are handled tastefully. I would like to think because of a content warning and age rating system advertisers and YouTube would be less likely to instantly pull the "Limited monitzation" trigger as both would know what they're getting into and can better gear their ads towards that. I would imagine that it would still be something that happened as you have intisapate bad actors (Creators hanging too close to edge, truely vail content ect.), and mistakes happen so purely relying on creator to correctly label their content 100% of time would solve the issue. but by have things be more incremental and have nuance in the system, I would like to think this would happen less.

Through self-moderation in being clear what an advertiser, algorithm, or user can expect, this could help in making a system that is less assuming of the worst case scenario of that content's topic, subject, or material. That is unless that creator has been proven by the community and moderation to repeatedly act in bad faith.

Now while I am talking about some infurtructual changes we can not ignore on elephant in the room. Youtube's unevenness is policy enforcement. This feels random to a a lot of YouTubers but this seems to manifest in two main ways:

Small or Independent creators recieve more scruitny and less support than larger creators or established brands. This includes Less harsh punishment if any on those larger channels on average.

While all youtubers have complained about the policy changes, there has been anwareness in it disprortionally affect minority communities such as the LGBT+ and BIPOC. These complains are not exclusive to youtube but it is present. Ironic give the kinds of radicalizing garbage that can seen on the site if you were a new user. (Go on YouTube shorts and just scroll if you never had before. I dare you.)

iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GaHcnPDcUOE" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen/iframe
(This video is often shared around as a point in number 2)

Regardless of policy changes, there must be an acknowledgement of this uneveness enforcement and addressed, else not a whole lot changes, or worse youtube devolves into video Elon's twitter. And in case you've been living under a rock, nobody wants to be an Elon twitter.

Now is this a perfect solutions? No, probably not. There's still the chance of false positives but with more variables now, assumes that Creators will act in good faith most of the time by correctly labeling their content, and I am saying this that if YouTube moderation had to step in that their style would be fair and even handed which current trend have shown the opposite (with this last one being possibly needing internal changes). And frankly i'm sure those that actually create Content as their profession might have even better ideas than a Canadian who merely spends way too much time on the internet, but the point still stands.

If YouTube, or any major User Generated Content Site, and Governments are going put much of the responsiility on Creator, there should be tools to properly act as such. One way being tools to best self moderate the content for a given audience and user advisory. It's only fair.

#YouTube #RTGames #PolicyChanges

Update 01/07/2023: RTGames has made a video with about his experience and wow the on 18+ policy is even worst that I thought. Which in to be able to watch Content under 18+ restriction you need provide government ID depending on the country. While I can understand Google's reasoning for this makes the current changes more worrying and a stickier situations than I initially thought. I still stand behind my statement made in this blog post as I remain firm that content should not be treated so black and white.

Video Below:

iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DRsVDZvmaAE" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen/iframe

hr
A a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCnep562d6A4eKeOy-J5xxQ/"Nemes Content/a Blog 2022.]]>

As for meaningful control, can't pick and choose what effectively ads could appear on a Creator’s videos as seen in this old video by Hank Green:

Content Warnings is one way we can better categorize content without it going full “Limited”.

Plus, the algorythm in all of its “Wisdom” love getting information about.

I would like to think because of a content warning and age rating system advertisers and YouTube would be less likely to instantly pull the “Limited monitzation” trigger as both would know what they're getting into and can better gear their ads towards that.
