Nemes Content Youtube Rewind! – 2022

Today (December 23rd, 2022) I uploaded a compilation of all the funny bits I did in 2022. It’s quite the accomplishment as I only post about two videos in 2021, plus 1 compilation of all the work the previous years. Now I have 5 videos, plus a handful of original shorts, and this compilation.

There has even had a reasonable increase in viewership. To say I’m grateful, and content with what I have accomplished this year in an understatement as there was a while were I did start to doubt myself. As a celebration I am writing to go over the processes of this year, and what I learned from do them.

This is the Nemes Content Rewind 2022, Because YouTube killed Rewind but it’s still in our collective consciousness!

The FireRed Nuzlocke

This video took a year to make and really it didn’t have to be that way. There’s a few reasons why this took so long, including…

Did I still ultimately have fun with video? Yes. Do I think I want to do another big video like that again? Well, not in the way how I handled it.

Aside from the fact that I abandoned it to work on another long video for awhile, the fact I keep putting work on the video off really diminished it quality audit could have been out much faster. I think one strategy I could do to alleviate this is to cut down the audio a bit after each session that I recorded the voice over instead of waiting until all it was recorded. This would have saved me so much time when I was sitting in DaVinci.

Now am I still happy with how video turned out? Yes, but now with what I’ve learned I think I could do it better now. I think this was some of my better writing, and the intro is still one of my favourite parts. I also feel that a lot of the visual gags are still some of my strong suits in the videos. But some of the delivery feels stilted, and I think my ambition was higher than my skill or energy level. I didn’t phone it in, but it does feel rushed in places. Especially some of the sound mixing.

The vo changes how loud it is constantly so you could hear me without peak. current would tell past me that COMPRESSOR and LIMITERS EXIST! I should use an amplifier, and then compress down my VO. Subtly in sound is important but consistence is paramount in voice work. The audience still needs to hear you over everything else. Some of the mixing I did for this and past videos make me cringe.

Another thing that I learned from this and the Technoblade video is that, once you start going into the 10 minute+ length, that’s a commitment for the viewer. When I was going to do a Nuzlocke now it would be split up into parts. In the case of video essays, have video chapters as a stopping point like in the case of PatricianTV’s TES Essays.

Also the drawing/animated bit. That was purely because I wanted to make the burn heal joke. I regret nothing. And from what I saw from the shorts; that joke was quite the hit.

You better have burn HEAL!

Speaking of Shorts.

The Shorts Experiment

Youtube gets a bad wrap from the Old School Youtube crowd. Understandably so, I kind of fit somewhat to that crowd. I mean you’re reading this on a minimalist blog platform, If you called me an internet hipster I would not be surprised.

However in 2021, I decided to put my bias aside for a moment to at least try it. I took a strategy that I learned in my Television College Course was to repackage the content for another format. I did this with one of my joke that I did for the technoblade video, and to this day that short it is still probably one of my high viewed videos.

I didn’t use the feature for a while, until after I did the nuzlocke in which I started to post shorts of the funny bits from video in shorts content. The views varied, but it was more views that I was used to when I was only get 30ish per video if I was lucky.

And so I started a strategy that when I knew I didn’t have videos coming for a while, I would repackage my old content as shorts. The views varied pretty wildly but most had decent viewership and many had great retention (something I care about much more).

Buzz Saws go Brrrrrrrrr!

This was largely motivated by ego as there was apart of me saying to myself “I know these are funny jokes, but no one is seeing them.” I’m glad I did do this as I feel like a large portion of my channel’s growth this year was from this change, and while I have my own personal issues with shorts, I’m glad I tried it in the end. Plus it helps that shorts have their own section on YouTube now, so things are little cleaner and less cluttered.

Many videos just shoot up in views and then plateau, but some videos are lucky enough to have views still climbing at a good rate. I have yet to noticed a pattern, seem kind of random to be honest, but surprise to no one big games seem to get a lot of views most of the time (See: Hollow Knight and Splatoon). Just note that if you are trying to get the word out about a video, you’ll want to link that video in a Pinned Comment, people do not look at the description of a short.

I also tried experimenting with orginal shorts content with mixed success. Some videos did well others did not. I think I still want to do some skit shorts going forward next year but we’ll see. That being said even with some of the issues I personally have with shorts, it is not the “low effort content” that many say that it is.

Also MAN I am doing a review of the mobile “create a short feature” of the app because I was very frustrated making my twitter rant short.

The Capture Card Trilogy

I'm in the club with Lisa Simpson.

Having an issue with the EzCap GameLink Raw was probably the happiest little accident I had because it first spawned one of my best videos to date…

And then it spawned 2 more and a few shorts out of it. That trilogy was the most success I’ve experienced on YouTube for a while. Good viewership, Good comment engagement. This really showed me the power of consent uploads, and having videos being split up into parts.

It was also maybe one of the most fun times I’ve had making videos. I was using a lot of my knowledge from school, I really applying myself to try and make these videos as good as possible. Personally I feel that had good use of B roll, good jokes, as good information as I could provide.

A lot of the inspiration was around SuperEyePatch Wolf and Caddicarus with their computer builds. Because BOY I sure felt like I was losing it during that whole exploration. One of my favourite details was that in part 2 you can see my hair getting wilder and wilder throughout the video, because I had a habit of pulling and stroking my hair while acting like I was going crazy.

I think I finally hit my stride in content, and found what kind of content I want to make with this channel. Which to be fair I knew for a while that I wanted really get across that I’m a nerd who gets really excited and love talking about technology, but I didn’t quite know what that would look like until now. So I am officially on my tech arc guys! Still want to do some gaming, but there’s a lot of tech stuff I want to talk about.

Also expect at least one or two more video relating to the capture cards as there have been comments in the video that I’d like address.

The Splatoon Video

Splatoon screenshot with memes.

So I didn’t make an official bet with Mom but I thought it would be really funny if I had an easier time with here on that mission. Plus Splatoon was a popular game so I figured it would do okay. I feel as though a lot of the editing was tight with that video and I am more confident in my editing now after doing that video. It’s also nice that this video is just over 6 minute as a lot of my videos are longer than that on average. So it was a good change of pace.

As a result I feel that this video was more concise and overall a nice quick video to watch. I would like to make move videos of this length in the future. It got to the point and little fluff.

And that’s a wrap! Thank you for reading this until the end. I just basically wanted to write my heart out about my feelings for the year. I’m also thinking about making a “Yearly Theme” Post so be sure to subscribe via rss, or the fediverse if you want to read that.
